Madison SS old set up for long riders with light bar on front |
No traffic to speak of on the route to the coast. The Rancho Santa Fe rollers were quiet this hour too. Also no commuter bike traffic on the cast in the five-o'clock hour. It's Saturday! Camp wasn't open yet to cyclists (I think) so I opted for the I-5 experience. NB lane was dirty to the Rest Area. I stopped for a bathroom break. Rode up the tourist path to the overlook. You could see some of the Pacific Ocean and a lot of the highway below. I-5 north of the Rest Area was spotless! Not even a rock or gravel to be found! Las Pulgas turn found 3 cars in the parking lot. A welder was working on a excavator bucket before the tunnel. San Onofre Campground was 2/3 full. The initial "No Camping Area" was full of surfers cars. Must me something going on today? Stopped at Bathroom #1 to refill bottles. Raced a guy up the Trestles Bike Path. At the top I noticed a mile long line of I-5 traffic stopped. I swung over to El Camino by Carl's Jr. and rode north. Nearing the 7-Eleven, I pulled over near I-5 and saw a jack-knifed semi into the ice plant. The trailer had come around and pinched the cab into the hillside. Looked like no injuries, but lots of fuel spilled out.
Rode north to lite bike traffic. No hook-up on the Bike-Way to Dohney Park. I was clock watching a bit as I got a cookie near the control for receipt. Overcast today, so there didn't seem to be any headwind on the way back either. Right A. tendon was aching a little, so I dumped a 1K mg Tylenol on it. Stopped at the #1 bathroom on the way back. A few racers flew by. I rode comfortably at 18 mph through the campground. At the Las Plugas lot, there were a whole pack of women deciding which way to go. Not normal, I opted for the I-5 route again. Max trash on the section to the Rest Area. That cleared up some further south. Saw a nice small American Flag roadside and thought about stopping to stick it on my bag. By that time I was 100 meters past it and didn't want to turn around now! Made good SS time up the last highway climb into Oceanside. Stopped at the Harbor Drive bathroom.
Hooked up with the SLR after the bridge. Didn't feel in rhythm now as there was a slight headwind heading east. Caught some raindrops going into Bonsall. I pulled into AM/PM with 20 riders from Ranchos Cycle Club. Had to opt out of my yogurt snack now. Just filled my bottles with ice and headed out. Another 20 NCCC long riders came it. Whew! A whole lot of riders milling around as I met more crossing Hwy. 76. Glad to get out of there.
More raindrops riding on Camino Del Rey. No sign of the Rando riders yet as I turned up Hwy. 395. I thought I would stop and do a flip flop on the rear wheel just before the Champagne climb. This would bring in the 20T cog and ease the load on my Achilles. I usually do the swap out in 45 seconds. After trying the flop, I noticed that the chain was too short and the tire was rubbing on the seatstay bridge! DUH! I flipped it back as 3 Westcoast Racing riders went by. I hung back off of them, but finally started to bridge the gap! They got a little excited as I pulled up. Ramping it up some, we all rode together up the climb. I was sucking wind @13mph, but made it up OK and thanked them for the pull as they turned on Deer Spring Road.
No sign of Rando riders yet as I cruised down Jesmond Dene. Finally met Gerald Cook on Broadway. Waived and noted it was around 1100. Waited around the Broadway intersection and saw the "Quatro Amigos" turning north. I followed them to the pizza place. They said they were riding the Brevet but lost a rider. I returned to the 7-Eleven control. Mike Shaw came in next. Soon Tim Sullivan, Jimbo Wisener and the lost "amigo" came in. Jimbo said he lost his buddies. I offered to take him ahead to where they were having pizza. Happily reunited, I returned to the 7-Eleven where other riders came in. Chatted with Molly Cook, freshly back from a stint at The Great Lakes Navel Station. After Mel Cuttler left at 1225, I was wondering where Keith Olsen was. I planned to ride around to Bonsall with him. At 1245, I back-tracked the route west, Didn't see any riders at all. Maybe he pulled off for lunch? At CSUSM, I turned off and finished off the Ursa Minor at San Marcos. (Later I found out he wasn't up to it and bailed at Doyle Park at far away UTC!)
