Coffee At Peet's Populaire

Yoga class on the Carlsbad Beach today!
Last minute decision to do this "recovery" ride on a Saturday. Nice relaxing one bottle ride today. Had cleaned up the SOMA from Thursday's "Surfliner" and oiled the chain too! Left at 0700 on the dot and headed northward at a slo pace to warm up. No stretching or pre-ride stuff today. Weather was overcast & humid, almost foggy. Normal weather design for a hot day inland. Didn't see any riders going up Champagne as usual. Did see a few on Camino del Rey. Stopped at McDonald's in Bonsall for the normal 40 cent receipt and a ice refill on the bottles. Had some sandwich bits and one banana. Carry along food keeps nice in the larger seat bag.

Fast ride west on Hwy. 76. Didn't seem to be any tailwind or any wind at all. More bikers out now on the SLR. One red shirted guy on a TT bike passed me. I gave him 1/4 mile and then paced with him. I was humping at 19mph for most of the way to keep up with him. Never did close the gap much. Looped off at Harbor Drive and rode past the Oceanside Pier. A whole lotta people there early AM. It was a little after 0900 when I stopped off at the Carlsbad Oak Street 7-Eleven for a Smores. Sat on the bench overlooking the ocean and watched the hard-bodies doing yoga on the beach.

Typical SDBC group ride. I hooked up with stragglers on the coast.
Many riders going south now and I hooked up with a few. One guy on a touring rig and girlfriend on a carbon TREK. He said he was riding from San Fran to LA in August with his midwestern brothers! Camping out each inght. Nice story. The SDBC group of 50 went by and I picked up a few stragglers. Looked like new green/black kits for SDBC this year. These dudes were doing 20mph so I drafted along. A few cut off for snacks, but I followed the rest to Del Mar where I turned off. Went over to Del Dios Highway and the climb up to Escondido. Need to make up a new populaire route going this way. Saw a few NCCC riders nearing Citracado Pkwy. Guess they were finishing up a ride. Took the bike path over to San Marcos finish.

Overcast early, clear later in the morning
