Velocity Deep V rim came in. Rebuild wheel time. |
Time for a short training ride on a warm day. Left the house to the start... returned to house to get my correct glasses. Nice. Rode over to start and got receipt. Oh OH. Forgot something at home again. Did a re-route and rode home, dumped my arm warmers and woolie cap and headed out to Bonsall. Already 70 degrees.
Nice ride over, did a quick turnaround at AM/PM and headed toward the coast on the 76. Fast as there was no usual headwind. Clicked into the SLR Bike Path hoping to hook up with some racers. ;Not to be, as they were all heading eastward. Made good time trying to hold a steady 18mph into a slowly building headwind. A bunch of drunks were yelling at the Circle K in Oceanside. I got a 15 cent Reese Piece and got the heck out of there! Lots of riders out today, day before Christmas.
Stopped at Chuck's Bike Shop to check some window shopping. Nice blue Salsa Fargo in the window. Pacific Coast Cycles was closed till around Jan 4. 2014. Rode to Magee Park for some water and then southward with a side wind. Chatted with several riders along the way south. Came across a loaded touring rider from New York riding a black Surly Cross Check, just like the one I had.
Surly Cross-Checkset up for Asian touring rider from "New York" |
Cheesy logo has to go. |
Someone yelled my name as I exited Encinitas. Mike Shaw had family out for lunch. We chatted a bit and he
said he was riding the Coronado Express on Saturday. Good, maybe Sandy will come with him. Looks like a nice small gruppo of 5-10 riders maybe. Not much else exciting on the route. Temps warmed up to 77 degrees by the time I got back to San Marcos. NICE.
Now time to relace the Velocity wheel and get some speed back into the Fuji carbon again! Velocity rim logo is real cheesy and has to go.

Wheel Build Update
Finished up the rear wheel build today and all looks spot-on. The raw VELOCITY Deep V 20H rim had a big flat spot on one side.. around 3/8" dip in the space of 12". That's a massive wheel hop. Also the rim joint will catch your fingernail every time. What a poor finishing job for made in the USA! Rather disappointed.
Took me several hours to get things lined up. Used new brass nipples and stayed with the same straight bladed spokes already attached to the Velo hub. Set the radial side at Park 15 and the drive side at 20 on the tension gauge. Never knew what is was supposed to be, but that "sounded" good. Pre stressed the spokes by whacking in on the floor and bouncing it with my weight on.
Put on a Gatorskin 28mm tire to match the front. Also reset the blade spokes for proper aero flow...whatever that is. I'll probably use this set on the Coronado Express on Saturday. Keep the air pressure around 80psi for comfort ride. Can't wait for the Mavic Open Pros.. then I can compare the wheel builds.
tada,
kellyjay
